TikTok is a very popular app which allows people to create videos using special effects and share them with other viewers. People have become mini celebrities thanks to the app. Chances are that either you or someone you know uses TikTok. After all it has over a billion users, of which more than 240 million are in India, according to app analytics firm Sensor Tower. So, it is quite a big thing and its popularity was only growing from here, which is why it came as a big surprise when India enacted a TikTok Ban.
The Madras High Court recently banned the social video app, claiming that TikTok “degrades culture and encourages pornography”. The main concern is that some of the videos shared on TikTok were pornographic in nature and that young children could easily access these videos. The court has previously said that children were vulnerable to exposure to sexual predators.

TikTok is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance Co., who is currently trying to repeal the ban, claiming that this ban imposes on free speech, and that in reality, a very minuscule percentage of the content was actually flagged by users as inappropriate or obscene. It also claimed that by law, the app and its creators cannot be held liable to content created and shared on it by third-party users.
