PCOS Pregnancy: How long will it take to get pregnant if you are suffering from PCOS?

A woman trying to conceive, if not successful, during the course of medical evaluation, may get diagnosed with PCOS. Infertility is a major worrying symptom of PCOS. When being treated for PCOS related infertility, the question that concerns the couple the most is how long would it take to get pregnant. Struggling to get pregnant is mainly attributed to high levels of male hormones in PCOS that prevent the release of a mature egg. Ovulation may be irregular or completely absent in PCOS. Chances of PCOS Pregnancy can be improved by weight loss, diet, physical activity and following a calculator for ovulation and timing sexual intercourse accordingly. If these do not help, fertility medications as per the indications derived from fertility tests may be prescribed. In severe cases, surgery for removing certain tissues that produce androgens may be necessary to trigger Ovulation. The last resort after all other attempted methods have not yielded results, is to try conception through IVF. Good news is that majority of women with PCOS conceive through lifestyle changes and infertility treatment, not requiring surgery or IVF.

Ability for a woman with PCOS to conceive largely depends on Ovulation. Normally, the release of an egg from the ovary, happens once every menstrual cycle, typically every month. Women with PCOS may ovulate less or not ovulate at all and hence it is difficult to predict the time of ovulation. Menstrual periods are a sure sign for predicting ovulation time to coincide sexual intercourse along for conception and PCOS Pregnancy. But the irregularity in menstrual bleeds and ovulation makes it very difficult to plan and make the coincidence happen. In other words, PCOS makes it harder to time sex to the fertile days of the menstrual cycle, when the egg is available for fertilisation. It also takes much longer to become pregnant if ovulation is rarely occurring like just about once in every few months. Women with PCOS are also more prone to miscarriages and all this put together is the cause for PCOS as a common cause of infertility or delayed pregnancy.

Women with PCOS generally think that they will be unable to get pregnant, but this is not all true. Though not on a predictable schedule, Ovulation can still happen and fertilisation be successful with high chances of pregnancy to continue up to child birth. Women with PCOS who are looking forward to having children are more likely to reach out and demand fertility treatments than people who don’t have PCOS. On a positive note, research shows that women with and without PCOS have a similar number of pregnancies and children. In fact, the study affirms that majority of women with PCOS trying to conceive will get pregnant and deliver without any fertility treatment at least once in their life.

Couples, who are interested in parenting a child would be anxious to know how long it would take to get pregnant. In case of women with PCOS, the anxiety is even more because of the symptoms and treatments being experienced. The time period for getting pregnant may vary from couple to couple depending on certain influencing factors.

These factors can have an impact on PCOS Pregnancy:

Age

Medical experts suggest that fertility treatments for female are to be sought for, only on failing to conceive after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse. This applies if the couple is well under the age of 35 years. For couples above the age of 35 years, the wait period would be six months to seek medical intervention. Older the woman with PCOS, more severe the treatment plan in terms of time constraints and intensity of medications. The female reproductive system ages rapidly after the age of 35 and natural course of ovulation may be affected. Treatments may not show positive results and in women with PCOS, this can be the worst that can happen.
Treatment options for PCOS vary with advancement in age. Infertility treatments started at an early age reap best results, so much so that diet and physical activity alone can help achieve PCOS Pregnancy. Whereas, older women with PCOS seeking treatment may succeed only after Ovarian drilling or with IVF.
The age factor applies to the male partner as well. Older men may not produce fertile sperms and hence can contribute to difficulty in achieving pregnancy. Treatment options also have to take in to consideration the age of the male partner to decide on a more suitable solution for the couple.

Achieve PCOS Pregnancy

General Health

Women with PCOS may also suffer from other ailments that can affect the mode of treatment and outcome. PCOS accompanied by high blood sugar, hypertension and high cholesterol may get controlled with treatment towards the symptoms but medical conditions that pre-exist such as Uterine Fibroids may interfere with the desired result of achieving PCOS Pregnancy. Male health conditions such as low sperm quality or sexual disorders can equally affect child bearing in couples. If a woman with PCOS is not able to conceive even after treatment, male health evaluation and further necessary corrective measures may need to be applied. The treatment period may get extended in case of any other medical concern in either of the partners and can further delay conception.

Risk Factors

Apart from specific health conditions, life style habits can also affect the effectiveness of treatment. Risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, drug abuse, exposure to industrial toxins, stress and sexually transmitted infections. One or more of these can have ill effects on health that reflect in the quality of sperm or eggs produced by corresponding partners. In such circumstances, the treatment procedure may involve more than just treatment towards PCOS which may consume more time to achieve PCOS Pregnancy.

PCOS management

Above all, for most women with PCOS who are overweight or obese, first line of treatment consists of moderate weight loss which results in more regular ovulation, making the egg more often available for fertilisation thereby increasing the chance of PCOS Pregnancy. Women who know they ovulate, should attempt having sexual intercourse during the “Fertile Window” period. The ‘fertile window’ is the day an egg is released from the ovary (ovulation) and the five days beforehand. Having sex (intercourse) during this time gives the best chance of getting pregnant.

Woman with PCOS Test

In women who fail to conceive with lifestyle management may require more advanced treatment procedures involving hormonal medications, surgery or artificial reproductive techniques. Chances of conception depend entirely on the effectiveness of the treatment. If a PCOS treatment plan is well followed and executed, the chances of conception are higher and faster. The ground rule is to stick to the treatment regime and undergo regular evaluation for further follow up. The severity of the symptoms and adherence to respective treatment plan decides how fast a woman with PCOS may conceive.

These are just some factors that may affect the chances of a woman to conceive when she has PCOS. Targeting these factors with an effective treatment plan can lead to the best chance for PCOS Pregnancy. The fertility specialist will test the couple and take into consideration all these factors before deciding on a treatment plan, which will hopefully result in the woman getting pregnant.
