Coronavirus Safety Tips

Coronavirus has taken the world by storm. Everyone is panicking, and with good reason. Since the first case was reported in Wuhan, China, at the end of 2019, the virus has rapidly spread around the world. Most major countries have reported at least a few reported cases if not more. They are now all struggling to limit the spread of the disease. Here are some Coronavirus Safety Tips that can help you and your family stay safe and not contract the virus.

The first and foremost thing you should do is follow the Coronavirus Safety Tips or guidelines as set by your government and local authorities. If there is a curfew or quarantine implemented in your area, then follow it. It may be boring, but it may also just keep you and others healthy. Also, if schools, malls, gyms, swimming pools, and other public areas are closed, they are closed for a reason, please stay away, for your and for other’s safety. Because if you have the virus, and you might, the symptoms don’t start showing for up to 14 days after infection, then you might just infect others. Similarly, if you don’t have the virus, you could easily catch it from someone who may be infected but is not showing symptoms yet. And yes they can still spread the virus even though they have no symptoms. So, what can you do?

Don’t Panic. There is no need to panic, at least not yet, even if you don’t have the luxury of work from home, or you need to step out for some groceries, here are some Coronavirus Safety Tips that you can follow to keep yourself and your family safe.

Use Hand Sanitizer

Coronavirus Safety Tips to follow for your own protection:

Do:

  • Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 secs – this wears down the protective skin of the virus and effectively kills it.
  • Use Hand Sanitizer when you can’t wash hands – Sanitizers are not an alternative for washing hands. Washing hands is the most effective way to kill the virus, however, if you can’t get to a handwash station, then hand sanitizers can do in a pinch. But they must be at least 60% alcohol.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue while coughing or sneezing – Coughing and sneezing sprays the virus in the form of droplets into the air. Coughing or sneezing into the tissue limits their spread. Remember to wash hands after immediately disposing of the tissue.
  • Cough and sneeze into your elbow to avoid spreading germs – the elbow is the safest place to sneeze, as you are less likely to accidently touch your mouth or nose with your elbow. Similarly, it is less likely that someone will touch the inside of your elbow than your hand.
  • Wear Masks – wear masks as much as possible. They help avoid the spread of germs.
  • Stay away from people who are coughing or sneezing – This seems obvious. Stay away from people who are sick. They could have a normal cold, the flu, or the Covid-19 virus, in any case, you don’t want it.
  • Regularly disinfect surfaces and door handles – You or someone, i.e. coworker or delivery person, etc. can contaminate surfaces and or door handles, even in your home. Remember to disinfect tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, computers, phones, keyboards, sinks, toilets, faucets and countertops immediately after or at least once a day to kill off any germs.
  • Stay home as much as possible – You know where you have been and who has been in your house, hence you can limit the spread of the Coronavirus in your house. Outside you won’t have any control, hence whenever you can, stay within the safety of your home.
  • Maintain at least 6ft distance from people at all times – Even if you must go out, try to maintain at least 3 to 6 feet of distance from other people, in case they are infected. It is unlikely that they the virus can transverse that kind of distance.
  • Go to the doctor – If you suspect that you are sick, especially from Coronavirus then seek medical help immediately. Follow what the doctors and medical professionals tell you.

Don’t:

  • Touch your face, especially your mouth, nose and eyes – if you have accidently touched a contaminated surface, then you risk transferring the virus into your body via your mouth, nose, or eyes.
  • Cough or sneeze without covering – this spews the virus in the form of droplets into the air, surfaces or directly onto people. So, don’t cough into the air, cough into a tissue or into your elbow.
  • Shake hands with people or Touch people – contact is the easiest and fastest way to spread the virus. So, don’t shake hands or touch anyone.
  • Have large gatherings or Be in close proximity to people – increases the chances of you coming into contact with someone who is sick. So, stay away.
  • Travel domestically or internationally – unless you absolutely have to, avoid travelling at all under any means. Most of the cases have been people who have travelled internationally, also airports are hotbeds for people carrying the disease, so they increase the risk of you catching the disease.
