Bedroom Design : Contemporary vs Modern vs Traditional Design

Bedroom Design

Designing a house, or even a room, can be hectic and most of all confusing. The bedroom is one of the most important rooms that one can design and while one has an idea of how they want their bedroom to look, picking a design or a style for the bedroom can often be stressful. The bedroom is supposed to exude the personality of the person who is going to sleep there and should also be in sync with their day to day habits. Hence, picking the right bedroom design style is very important; otherwise the person might not be able to relax in it.

There are so many styles and colors to choose from Contemporary, Modern, and Traditional.

There are three main bedroom design styles that are in right now: –

1. Traditional Bedroom Design
Traditional Bedroom Design
Traditional design is often the simplest one to understand from all three. The term traditional refers to the design of the early 20th century. It uses heavy, bold furnishings and very earthy tones such as deep red, brown, gold and dark green. The furniture is often large and the room is a little on the crowded side. A simple tip to understand traditional design – if you can picture it in a castle or a large colonial house, then it is probably traditional.

A traditional bedroom would include a King sized poster bed (canopy optional), a soft plush three-seater sofa in one corner with a center table for a nice cup of joe. The room can also include a fire place with a big painting or a mirror above it. These are some recurring ideas that can be seen in a traditional bedroom setting.

Modern Bedroom Design

Modern Bedroom Design
Modern often refers to designs from the mid 20th Century (1920s – 1970s), with designers referring to furniture from this era as 20th Century Classics. The word modern often means something different for many people, as they often believe that it includes futuristic design. While that may be true, modern actually refers to designs from the mid-20th century. It is also known as the minimalistic design.

Modern designs include clean, sharp lines and using as little as possible to make the most out of things. The furniture used has sleek, geometric lines that are very clean. It is not established for comfort but rather business. There are no curves or patterns. Modern furniture styles are sleek, uncluttered and functional. A futon with a solid cover? Modern design. Modern beds may not even have a headboard and can even be a sofa cum bed, depending on the space available. Modern designs include a lot of steel and are often raised off the floor for an airy feeling. Walls are often bare and colored in white or similar lighter color to add to the space and the floorings are commonly bare and wooden.

Contemporary Bedroom Design

Contemporary Bedroom Design
Now, contemporary is the most trickiest to explain as it sometimes blurs the line between traditional and modern. Contemporary design is rooted in the moment, as in here and now. It can include designs from any era and mix them with any other era. While it is often confused with modern, contemporary does not always share the straight lines but rather includes fluidity.

Current contemporary designs include shiny, reflective surfaces like glass and stainless steel. However, the furniture has a little more bulk and is comfortable compared to the one found in traditional design. Contemporary design relies heavily on artistic lighting fixtures, which are commonly used as a statement piece in a room.

Now it doesn’t really matter what is in right now, what matters most is that the bedroom design fits the person for whom the bedroom is for. It doesn’t even actually have to be any one particular style of design, it can be a combination of any or all different styles, whatever you want. Just ensure that the room isn’t too crowded, and has ample storage space, and makes the person happy, the rest is inconsequential.
